The former No.1 draft pick, Lachie Whitfield took a big leap in 2017 and will be looking to improve even further in 2018 to push himself into the elite status.
Player: Lachie Whitfield
Team: GWS Giants
Games played in 2017: 18
2017 Average: 97.6
100+ Scores: 6
90+ Scores: 10
Despite a suspension ruling out Whitfield for the first few months of the season, the young midfielder still managed to make significant improvements in the 2017 season. Whitfield managed to improve his SC average from 81.1 in 2016 to 97.6 in 2017 which is almost a 20-point increase!
Whitfield also showed glimpses of his scoring ceiling last year with 6 scores above the 110 point mark. These are scores you’re expecting from uber-premiums; and at only 23 years of age you should expect to see these scores more often as he improves his consistency.

Whitfield is apart of a star-studded midfield including the likes of Josh Kelly, Callan Ward and Dylan Shiel. All these players and the fully fit Stephen Coniglio are bound to cut into Whitfield’s midfield minutes which could have a profound effect on his scoring.
He also has a tendency to churn out these mediocre scores in the 70-90 range. At $536K you simply can’t afford scores like these; especially with other options such as Patrick Cripps around this price bracket.
Summary: Lachie will be hoping to continue on his upward trajectory and help the Giants finally reach that elusive Grand Final in 2018. His price is incredibly tempting considering the scores he can produce; but will he be get enough time in a midfield with plenty of star players?
Verdict: Given his age and potential I believe Whitfield should make further improvements to his game this season. He’s definitely one to watch over the JLT Series.
