Last Drinks – Richmond Tigers 2017 Preview

How are the Tigers going to fare in 2017? It mightn’t be pretty, but there is a lot to like about some of their SuperCoach options.

Blue Chip Investment

Dustin Martin – MID – $588,300

Dusty Martin has been one of the best players to watch in the competition for some time now, and probably Richmond’s most reliable SuperCoach player in that time too.

This year will be no different, and many are predicting he’ll have a career-best season in 2017. He doesn’t need to improve a lot to provide value – a top eight midfielder for under $600k would be an absolute bargain.

Mid Price Potential

Toby Nankervis – RUCK/FWD – $366,400

Certainly the Tigers’ number one ruckman already. A good apprenticeship at Sydney, a stellar JLT series, dual position status: all big positives.

His price is a great draw card too, freeing up a lot of cash if you decide to use him in one of your two starting ruck positions. However, you have to consider what sort of output you would deem acceptable.

With no real scoring history behind him, who knows what his ceiling is? Regardless, he will be selected in a lot of sides so many coaches will be riding the bumps with you.

Point of Difference

Trent Cotchin – MID – $546,800 – Player Ownership: 0.96%

Cotch, Cotch, Cotch. What’s the Richmond skipper and new Brownlow medalist going to bring to the table this year?

Durability isn’t a problem, which is one less thing to worry about. Since 2011 his season tallies have read 22 games, 22, 21, 22, 21 and 20 last year.

In his medal-winning year, he averaged a great 116.3, but hasn’t got near that tally since. Plenty of value if he can lift his average up to anything near that and the signs from the pre-season matches have been good: plenty of time on the ball and far less behind the it.

Dan Butler – FWD – $123,900

The speedster has been confirmed as a round one starter, music to the ears of all fantasy coaches. Whether or not we select him, at least it gives up options.

Very difficult to know just how he’ll score – around the 60-mark I’d be expecting, and his job security probably isn’t great. Bench spot at best.

JLT SC scores: 75, 53, 45

Stay Away

Ivan Maric – RUCK – $282,900

There’s no value here. He’s been a decent scorer in the past but right now he looks old, slow and frankly, a bit of a liability.
