Predicted Round 1 Teams – Essendon, Hawthorn, West Coast

SuperCoach HQ writers Josh G and Paul have contributed a couple of the sides you’ll read below, while Twitter follower Ricky helped out with West Coast’s side at the last minute. Thanks for your input fellas! Only one more article to come, with Brisbane, Gold Coast and Fremantle released tomorrow!

Essendon – Josh G – @Joshyg222

B: Baguley, Hartley, Dea
HB: Stanton, Hurley, Kelly
C: Parish, Watson, Zaharakis
HF: Colyer, Daniher, Langford
F: Walla, Hooker, Fantasia
FOL: McKernan, Heppell, Z.Merrett
INT: Goddard, Ambrose, Stewart, Green

Next in line: Begley, Green, Gleeson

– Hurley will plays as tall defender but will also be running off and using the ball.
– Stanton will be a running defender
– Parish and Zaharakis are there for the outside run. Both could rotate forward with Colyer and Fantasia.
– Watson, Heppell and Merrett will play mostly as inside mids with Watson pushing forward a bit.
– McKernan only playing until Leuenberger and Bellchambers are fit.
– In the forward set up, Hooker will play deep and Daniher higher with his marking prowess up the ground.
– Goddard will play midfield but can rotate forward and into defense.
– Josh Green is close to the best 22, but just misses out in my opinion.

West Coast – Ricky Power – @ricky_t_power

B: Nelson, Mackenzie, Sheppard
HB: Wellingham, McGovern, Hurn
C: Jetta, Mitchell, Gaff
HF: Masten, Darling, Hill
F: LeCras, Kennedy, Cripp
FOL: Vardy, Priddis, Shuey
INT: Yeo, Sheed, Hutchings, Petrie

Next in line: Barrass, Butler, Redden, Giles, Schofield, Duggan

Comments: West Coast will likely stick with the team that played in JLT3 for Round 1. The six listed as ‘next in line’ are a real chance to play early in the season, with Hutchings, Nelson, Mackenzie, Hill, Masten and Petrie the most likely to make way. West Coast won’t play a big role in SuperCoach this year. There are no relevant rookies at this stage, although Rioli or Watson could feature later in the year as downgrade options. Sheed is set in the best 22 and could make a bit of cash if team selections throw up a distinct lack of mid rookies. Wellingham has impressed in the JLT, spending more time in the midfield. However, he is much more likely to average 75-80 than 90+. Shuey looks likely to average around 110 due to the arrival of Sam Mitchell.

Hawthorn – Paul D – @palkal03

B: Duryea, Frawley, Birchall
HB: Henderson, Stratton, Gibson
C: Smith, T.Mitchell, Hartung
HF: Roughead, Vickery, Bruest
F: Rioli, Gunston, Puopolo
FOL: McEvoy, Shiels, O’Meara
INT: Burgoyne, Sicily, Burton, Stewart

Next in line: Howe, Whitecross, Langford, O’Brien, Miles

Comments: The off season really did see a few changes at Hawthorn, with Sam Mitchell, Jordan Lewis and Bradley Hill all departing. However, the Hawks added Tom Mitchell and Jaeger O’Meara, who will be great replacements to the midfield. Ricky Henderson and Ty Vickery will add depth and support to the defense and forward line respectively; Vickery also adds ruck support for McEvoy. With Hodge to return in Round 2 someone will have to come out.
