The Scorchers were finally knocked off the perch as the BBL reigning premiers in BBL|05, but with a steady and very well balanced squad, will be one of the favourites to take out BBL|06.
It could be possible that both Marsh boys will play the entire BBL, something unthinkable for the last couple of tournaments. And with them come a few very good fantasy options.

PLAYERS TO LOCK
Mitch Marsh, $53,000 [BAT/BOWL]
Thanks to the selectors for dropping Mitch Marsh – because we’ve now got a complete fantasy BBL player. He’ll bat in the top four and more than likely bowl his four overs every game. When he’s played for the Scorchers he’s been great: 26 games, 723 runs and an average of 40.17. Lock him in before his price sky-rockets.
Ian Bell, $65,000 [BAT]
I can’t help but feel the Scorchers have done a great job with their international signings for BBL|06. Bell is an experienced campaigner now, at 34, but is coming off some great Twenty20 form for the Birmingham Bears in England’s Twenty20 competition. He cracked 489 runs at an average of 40.75 and a strike rate above 130. He opened the innings for the Bears and I’m expecting him to do the same with Perth (or at very worst, number three).
PLAYERS TO LOOK AT
Ashton Turner, $30,000 [BAT/BOWL]
Turner is currently having a breakout season in the Sheffield Shield, recording the first two centuries of his career this season. With this form in tow, I see Turner taking a place in Perth’s middle order (number five or six). He can hit a big ball and also bowls handy off-spin, but with a bunch of all-rounders like Mitch Marsh, Ashton Agar and David Willey in the team, his bowling mightn’t be required. Hence, he’s not quite a lock.
Shaun Marsh, $83,100 [BAT]
Normally S Marsh would be in the ‘players to lock’ section, because nearly every time he’s played BBL he’s dominated. However, there’s a finger injury causing some doubt over Shaun’s availability. If he is deemed fit, I would certainly be slotting him in, because at $83,100, for a player of Marsh’s ability and considering he’s guaranteed to open, he’s a bargain.
PLAYERS TO LEAVE
Nathan Coulter-Nile $76,500 [BOWL]
NCN is an extremely talented and promising all-rounder who has played for Australia on 33 occasions. However, on the recent Australian tour to Sri Lanka, he sustained a serious back injury that has sidelined him for the entire summer. Spend those dollars elsewhere.
Jason Behrendorff $81,300 [BOWL]
What is it with fast bowlers and injuries? Behrendorff is another for the list, with a stress fracture keeping him out for the entire tournament too. He’s been a fantasy favourite in the past, with the ability to swing the ball at pace, but he’s going to have to be another one you simply cross off your list for this season (he’ll be cheap in BBL|07!).
