Newcastle Jets 2016-17 Fantasy Preview

New signings
Andrew Nabbout (free agent), Daniel Alessi (Western Sydney), Wayne Brown (free agent), Devante Clut (Brisbane), Jack Duncan (free agent), Andrew Hoole (Sydney FC), Ivan Vujica (free agent), Aleksandr Kokko (FoPS).

Mark Birighitti, Enver Alivodic, Josh Barresi, Ryan Kitto, Leonardo, Brandon Lundy, Cameron Watson

Pre-season results
On his return to his home town, Andrew Hoole was the star of the off-season with six goals. A draw and a loss to the Mariners meant the pre-season started as predicted, but the Jets, under new coach Mark Jones went on to defeat Melbourne City (4-0), Western Sydney (2-0) and two Chinese sides, in China. The bulk of the other goals from pre-season came via Danish centre forward Morten Nordstrand with 4 goals, former Vicotry striker Andrew Nabbout with 4 and ex-Brisbane forward Devante Clut, who nabbed three goals of his own.

A new manager, lots of new players but the same old story for the Jets: they’ll be up against it right from the start once again.
There is hope though through new signings Wayne Brown of England, Aleksandr Kokko from Finland and Aussie Andrew Hoole. Newcastle really struggled to produce consistent, big fantasy scorers last season and it’s hard to see that changing, unless the forward set-up clicks.

Early fixtures
Adelaide (home), Brisbane (home), WSW (away), Sydney (home)

Predicted Round 1 side
Hoffman, Boogaard, Mullen, Cowburn
Ugarkovic, Poljak
Hoole, Kokko, Brown

Fantasy Buy
As explained above, there haven’t been many Jets worth considering for the last season and a bit. Andrew Hoole (MID, $240k) has had a cracking pre-season, and although a move to Sydney FC didn’t produce big results, he’s a chance to to break out on his return to the Jets. Kristian Bymora (MID, $100k) looks like he’ll get some time coming off the bench and had scored a couple of goals during the pre-season.

Fantasy Don’t
First choice keeper Ben Kennedy (GK, $160k) has injured his Achilles tendon, and it wouldn’t be smart to pick an injured stopper as your starting goalie.  Also, steer clear of Nigel Boogaard (DEF, $190k), because given how shaky Newcastle’s defence has been, there mightn’t be too many clean sheets coming along.

LEAGUE: Don’t forget to join the league on – the league code is 117-325.
