Adelaide United 2016-17 Fantasy Preview

New Signings
James Holland (free agent), Sergi Guardiola (Granada), Ryan Kitto (Newcastle Jets), Nikola Mileusnic (Adelaide City), Marc Marino (Melbourne City), Jesse Makarounas (Melbourne Victory), Ben Garuccio (Melbourne City), Henrique (Brisbane)

Overview
Last year’s champions will enter their campaign with a lot of external expectation, but it will be a very different side that took the title last season. Having lost Bruce Kamau, Stefan Mauk, Bruce Djite and Craig Goodwin, among others, it will be crucial for the Reds that the new signings perform.

Pre-season results
The Reds were out early in the FFA Cup, ironically to Redlands United in the round of 32. Former Jet Ryan Kitto netted the goal in the 2-1 loss. A win over Malaysian side Penang FA was highlighted by a goal each to new boys Henrique and Marc Marino. Adelaide’s other pre-season fixtures included a 1-0 loss to Melbourne Victory and a 3-0 win over Kuala Lumpur FA.

Predicted Round 1 Side
Galekovic
Garuccio, McGowan, La Rocca, Elrich
Isaias, Makarounas, Holland
Henrique, Guardiola, Cirio

Adelaide play Newcastle on October 9.

Fantasy Buys
Young winger Ryan Kitto ($100k) comes across from Newcastle and has already made an impact in the pre-season matches; scoring in the FFA Cup and starting in several of the other matches. Plenty of attacking options for the Reds so I’m not expecting him to start early on but instead make cameos from the bench.

Former City fullback Ben Garuccio ($140k) gets the fresh start he’s been after with Adelaide. With a few injuries to the Reds’ defensive stocks it looks like Garuccio is a good chance to start, as he has been in the pre-season fixtures.

Fantasy Don’t
At $290k, Eugene Galekovic is the most expensive goalkeeper in the game. Therefore, be very wary about picking him. If we could guarantee he would be the highest scoring keeper, he’d be worth the investment. Unfortunately, with defensive injuries and personnel changes at the Reds, we can’t guarantee that.

He’s going to miss the season with an ACL injury, so don’t pick Jordan Elsey ($100k). Bad luck for the young defender, as he had a chance to make an A-League impact this season.

  1. Awesome to see this back for another season! Really appreciate the previews and updates. Are you going to do a page for all the new imports? Seems like there’s a tonne.

    1. Good to be back Jake! We’re going to try and get through all the team previews but there isn’t a whole lot of time until the season begins!

    1. Hey Marcus. Interesting move for which I’m sure Merrick will be delighted. We perhaps saw a small decline in his scoring last season, but not too a worrying extent. I’m not expecting him to hit PBs but he’ll be a very solid pick nonetheless. With all the attacking options around him, assists seem inevitable.
