Player Radar – Jimmy Bartel

Today I’ll be previewing a Brownlow medalist, three time premiership player and our first defender on the SuperCoach Player Radar this year. The legend himself Jimmy Bartel from The Geelong Football Club.

Player: Jimmy Bartel
Team: Geelong Cats
Age: 32 years and 1 month
Price: $470,400
Position: DEF
2015 Avg: 87.2
2015 Games: 11
100+ Scores: 5

After a troubled year with concussions and a knee injury, Jimmy is priced at an average of 87.2 and is only a tempting $470,400. Fully fit and back from injury, will you be backing the experienced old timer?

PROS
When it comes to past averages there is no sweat with Jimmy. He averaged 106 and 102 in 2013 and 2014 respectively, proving he’s a beast player and a very interesting prospect.
Take out his injury effected 5 in round 2 of 2015 Jimmy averaged 95.4 for the year and only played the two bad games scoring 66 in both.
Just like when Dane Swan was $464k at the start of last year, we have to jump on Jimmy with his appealing price tag of $470k. Like Swan, Bartel is coming off a rather poor season by his lofty standards. There is no reason why Jimmy can’t come back from this rare knee injury and play consistent good games for our SuperCoach sides.

CONS
Age… One thing that can scare many coaches of a player like Jimmy is age. Jimmy is around the age that many players retire or slow down. Although Jimmy still plays like a 25 year old, his body is getting older. Evidence to this statement is that Bartel was very close to retiring at the end of last season. After the concussion and the knee injury Jimmy was considering retiring so that he could focus on spending more time with his family.

SUMMARY
No stranger to big scores Bartel still has potential to be an elite scorer in the SuperCoach arena. At such a cheap price and defender status it is almost impossible to say no to this champion. Age shall not weary him. Like Enright, Pavlich, Hodge and co. The older they get the better they become. These blokes could play till the age of 50, Bartel will be fine.
Verdict: If the knee holds up this preseason and he plays well in the NAB challenge. Lock… Him… In!!

  1. I’ve already locked him in and lost the key! It’s either Jimmy or McVeigh for my D2 spot and having Jimmy gives me 60K to upgrade elsewhere. Also, Bartel is more consistent that McVeigh who can sometimes have off days.
