BBL|05 Captain’s Corner – GF

As the the Australian cricket summer winds down so does the BBL after about a month of entertaining T20 cricket we will see BBL|05 conclude tonight in Mike Hussey’s final game on Australian shores with the Sydney Thunder lead by Mike Hussey facing off against the Melbourne Stars lead by Mike’s brother David. It should be an amazing match with both teams full of match-winners including Andre Russell, Usman Khawaja, Jaques Kallis, Shane Watson, Mike Hussey and Kevin Pietersen to name a few. To check out a full preview of the BBL|05 Final check out Pinidu’s article here and to see a full recap of the first finals round in the SCHQ Gayle League by Josh click here. Anyways onto the top captaincy choices.

1. Usman Khawaja – Uzzie has been arguably the most in-form batsman in the country let alone the entire world. He’s been killing it in the Test scene for Australia racking up 100 after 100 and he continued his form in the BBL Semi scoring a match winning 104 not out of 59 balls! He’s averaging an incredible 110 BBL Fantasy points per round which include to massive 100’s and a lowest score of only 78. He will be by far the most popular choice this round.

2. Kevin Pietersen – KP loves the big stage, the pressure and the big game atmosphere and it certainly showed when he produced a match winning knock to rid of the Stars semi final hoodoo to help them progress to the Grand Final. He will relish the pressure of playing in front of what could be an 80,000+ crowd in attendance and if the Thunder try sledge him like David Willey did they will be in for a long hard night.

3. Mike Hussey – In what will be Mr. Cricket’s final game on Australian shores he will be hoping to finish his storied career in Australia with a bang by captaining this Thunder side to its first ever BBL title. I expect that he’ll likely put in an awesome MOTM worthy performance to try carry the Thunder home after joining them 2 years ago to try get the Thunder franchise back on track. But he might be pushed down the order to accommodate for Kallis’ return.

4. Andre Russell – Dre Russ has been the Thunder’s MVP so far this tournament and is likely the Player of the Tournament for BBL|05 as well. After having a poor BBL the season before for the Renegades I will admit I never saw this form coming but he has proven me wrong and has been consistently great for the Thunder this season and has been one of the keys in getting them to the Grand Final. If your looking for a captain who you can bank on scoring well Dre Russ is your man.

5. Shane Watson – Watto has improved through the course of BBL|05 and his recent performances have been great Fantasy wise. His move to opener has reaped rewards for him with the bat and in Jacques Kallis’ absence he has been getting a far bigger opportunity with the ball and he’s taken the opportunities with both hands. But with Kallis returning tonight it is possible he could be pushed down to 3 and might not get the 3+ overs necessary for an economy rate bonus.

Honourable Mentions: Clint McKay and Marcus Stoinis

  1. It’s gonna be a tough decision. So many fantastic options to chose from. For me, it’s between Andre Russell and Usman Khawja. The way I’m gonna decide is by the toss. If the Thunder bat first, I’m going with Russell, if the Thunder bowl first I’m going with Khawja. But then, I feel anxious that Pietersen might go big again? Thoughts?

    1. Hey Pinidu,
I’m waiting till the teams are announced at the toss to decided because the Thunder’s batting order will probably undergo a reshuffle with the return of Kallis which will force one of Watson or Khawaja to go to 3 and Hussey to 4 possibly. That’s also not good for Dre Russ because he might not get a pinch hit but most of his scores have come purely from the ball.

For me it’s going to come down to the batting order but I think they’ll do what they did in the second game where they went Khawaja and Kallis opening. If the Thunder bat first I’m going Khawaja if not then I’m going Dre Russ.

      1. Fair enough. My philosophy is that if the Thunder bat first, Dre Russ will be put in towards the 14-15th over to go big and get a good total. But if they are chasing, they might be more conservative and the top order will finish it off similar to the semi final, hence, why I was thinking of going with Khawaja.

  2. Yeah have to agree with your philosophy. Only reason I’m going Khawaja if they bat first is there will be no limit on how much he could score meanwhile if they’re batting second they could’ve skittled the Stars and only be chasing a small total.

Anyways how’s your team looking. I’ve got 2-3 players who are slightly risky because I don’t want my team looking the same as others and I want a chance to jump rankings. What about you?

    1. Sorry for the late reply.
I’ve got three players with a risk element. The problem is that there are so many to chose from: Green, Ahmed, Stoinis, Wright, Hilfy, Zampa and Worrall. I’ll be waiting for the toss. Good luck. 🙂
